Bishops Stortford SC Easter Invitation
Saturday 2nd April 2011 saw 27 club members enter the first Easter Invitation Meet organised by Bishops Stortford Swimming Club. Held at the Charles Mellow Pool at Bishops Stortford College, this gala was a gentle introduction to competitive swimming for our younger swimmers without the pressure of a big event like our annual club championships or a large open meet. Races were held in all four individual strokes (25m for 9 and under 10, 50m for everyone else). Congratulations to all of our swimmers who took part. You all did really well, not only swimming some great races but also in doing a great job in supporting one another. Well done to everyone involved.
Certificates were awarded for all competitors and if you haven’t yet collected yours, please see Steve (Tuesday) or Dave (Thursday) on club night. If you would like your individual times for the events that you swam in, you can find them HERE.
Club subscriptions
At our last meeting, the committee discussed whether an increase to the club’s annual subscription would be necessary. We’re pleased to report that in light of the maintained expanded membership, our current level of income is sufficient to meet current expenditure which means that we can avoid any price increase. In these ever-more difficult times we’re pleased to be able to keep our subs at such a low level, making it one of the cheapest and healthiest forms of exercise around! However, the committee agreed that the ‘pay as you go’ system (that primarily operates on a Tuesday night for those swimmers who occasionally swim twice per week) would be phased out. Accordingly, any member who swims (or would like to swim) twice per week (and hasn’t already done so) will need to amend their standing order in accordance with the current pricing structure (£11 per month for 1 night per week; an additional £7 per month for the second night per week).
Subscription summary:-
- Members swimming 1 night per week (Thursday or Tuesday) - £11 per month payable via standing order
- Members swimming 2 nights per week (Tuesday and Thursday) - £18 per month payable via standing order
- ’Pay as you go’ option is being phased out

Peanuts League 2011
For our younger members, please be aware that the Peanuts League is about to start. Round 1 will be at Potters Bar (6:30 warm up for 7pm start) on Saturday 30th April. Round 2 will be on Saturday 21st May (venue to be decided) and round 3 occurs on Saturday 2nd July. Please keep these dates free in your diaries.
School holiday opening
With significant reductions in the number of members attending on club nights during all school holidays (both half term and end of term) the committee have elected to run reduced hours training during these periods on Thursday nights. Thursday night training during school holiday periods will therefore now be restricted to 6:30 to 8pm on a “turn up and swim” basis (Tuesday nights will continue from 7:30 to 9pm).
New lane ropes
We are now the proud owners of a brand new set of antiwave lane ropes that are now finding regular use each week at all of our training sessions. The shiny roller on which they are stored is also new and makes for easier daily use. This state of the art equipment represents the very best we could purchase and needs to be looked after (don’t hang on them!) and was a considerable drain on club funds. Sadly, in these budget constrained times, the pool operators (SLM) were unable to assist in their purchase in return for our offer of shared use. However, we have been very fortunate in securing significant financial support from the Buntingford Memorial Charity to assist with their purchase which has eased the burden on our limited club resources.
We have also been very fortunate in securing additional funding for our project from the ASA in the guise of a British Gas Club Grant and we would like to thank both for their generosity.
We are very grateful for their kind generosity; please take time to look at our sponsors page for further details of these supportive charities.
Aquathlon
Difficulties with arranging this year’s aquathlon have meant that it will be postponed in favour of an event to be run during the summer. Apologies for an disappointment this may cause.
